Tufsingdalen

A Playful Hillside Retreat

Perched on a hillside in the untouched countryside of Nord-Østerdalen, this holiday home is not a conventional extension but a bold, playful addition to an existing house. The site’s steep slopes and sweeping views over the valley shaped a design that feels both rooted in the terrain and open to the vast landscape.

Rather than blending into the original structure, the new volume has its own character — a lively façade that shifts with light and season, creating a dialogue between old and new. Generous glazing captures the ever-changing daylight of the Nordic year, from the low, golden sun of winter to the long, lingering evenings of summer.

Inside, the spaces are oriented to frame the valley and invite the outdoors in, making the dramatic scenery a constant presence. The result is a holiday retreat that celebrates both the shelter of home and the freedom of nature, where architecture becomes a playful mediator between human comfort and the wild beauty of Nord-Østerdalen.
